“The American Heart Association’s Heart Walk held it’s first
ever LA wide event at the beautiful Home Depot Center sports complex.
Hornet Nation entertained the crowd of over 3,000 participants with
their smooth rock n’ roll tunes and groovy “Austin Powers”,
played by front man John Gilpin. The band was very friendly, flexible
and easy to work with. We all had a great time for a great cause.”

From the Northrop Grumman Integrator, dated October 10th, 2005.

NGRC WINGs club puts heart and soles together for a life-saving cause
American lives affecting people of all ages and ethnicities. “Most of us know someone affected by cardiovascular diseases or stroke,” said 2005 Heart Walk chairman Jeff Barnhard.

“The walk is a great excuse to get outdoors for a healthy activity that also benefits heart education and prevention.”

Many walkers on Sept. 18 shared the bond of a personal connection. Walkers Jane Jones, manufacturing engineer for the Advanced Manufacturing Center, and her husband Greg, were there because Jane’s cousin was the recipient of a heart transplant just a few years ago. “The most important step is getting people to understand that it (heart disease) can happen to anyone,” said Jones. “We’re here in honor of my cousin and to support an event that pushes to educate others about heart disease.”

Like the Joneses, Diane (Kiona) Acello, manufacturing engineer, Advanced Manufacturing Center, and her daughter Brandee walked in support of Diane’s parents who suffered from these diseases. “Our family has been hit hard by both diseases,” said Diana. “My father suffered a stroke, succumbing to cancer last year, and my mother has had a heart attack and undergone triple bypass surgery. Thanks to the AHA-LA, my daughter and I have a place to be with other families affected by these diseases and hope that, through research and education, future family tragedies can be avoided.”

Special thanks this year go out to the WINGs club for coordinating this year’s very successful Heart Walk volunteer campaign, especially WINGs co-commissioner Beth Green, program execution for the Multi-Platform Radar Technology Insertion Program. Along with the assistance of Sector Community Relations, WINGs took responsibility for soliciting employee walkers and publicizing the event. Green credits the Community Relations team and Northrop Grumman employees for their support, “I feel very fortunate to work at a company with so many wonderful people who are willing to volunteer,” said Green. “Having experienced people close to me being affected by heart disease and cancer, I appreciate the support Northrop Grumman and my co-workers have offered in these efforts and other community events.”

Besides providing funding to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular disease, the AHA also supports research, education and advocacy. In support of their public awareness campaigns, the Heart Walk focuses attention on the importance of regular physical exercise as part of a hearthealthy lifestyle.
