1981 - Seniors

 

Greg Arnold - 4 Years
Greg has participated in the Concert, Symphonic and Marching bands. He was section leader of the trumpet section in concert band during his freshman year. While attending Cal Poly Pomona Greg plans to major in Animal Science.

 

Marcellus Barron - 4 Years
Marcellus has been an active member of the trumpet section playing in the concert, Symphonic, and Marching bands. He has also been very active in the Drama Department. Marcellus is planning to attend CSULA and become an established actor, writer, and director.

 

Dwight Bither - 4 Years
Dwight has been active in the Concert, Symphonic, Marching, and Jazz Ensemble groups playing both trumpet and eclectic bass. The past two years he has been the cornet section leader. His numerous awards include: Most Promising Freshman, Outstanding Sophomore, Outstanding Junior and the All American Hall of Fame band Award and the US National band Award. He is currently band president. He plans to attend MSAC for two years, and then continue onto Cal State Fullerton to major in music and someday become a college director.

 

Rod Foster - 4 Years
Rod has played tenor saxophone in the Concert, Symphonic, Marching and Jazz Ensemble groups. Besides being a member of the EHS Sax Quartet, Rod has also been a member of the West Covina All City Youth Band. Rod is currently the section leader in the Symphonic Band. Rod has won the 1981 US National Band Award. He plans to major in journalism at the University of La Verne.

 

Jodi Frasier - 4 Years
Jodi is currently the captain of the Trojanette Drill Team. She has on the "Most inspirational" award and the Advisor Award. She also played clarinet in the band for two years. Jodi is planning to attend Cal State Fullerton to study and major in Performing Arts.

 

Tom Hibner - 4 Years
Tom has been a very active member of the Concert band, Symphonic, and Marching bands. He has also been a very hard working member in the trumpet section. His future plans are to attend Cal Poly Pomona but his major undecided as of yet.

 

Gloria Houts - 4 Years
Gloria has played flute in the Concert, Symphonic and Marching bands. She has participated in girls' athletics and EHS and the German Club tour to Europe. Gloria has been a very helpful member of the band with her good attitude. She plans to attend Cal Poly Pomona to major in Sports and mathematics.

 

Donna Laughton - 4 Years
Donna has played percussion the Symphonic and Marching bands. She has also participated in the 1981 Jazz Ensemble Reno Tour. Upon graduation, Donna plans to work and take voice lessons. She has benefited the band an awful lot during her four years.

 

Melissa Hummel - 4 Years
Melissa plays saxophone, bassoon and flute and has participated in each of our major performing groups. She has also been active in concert choir and drama. Melissa has held offices such as section leader and librarian beside being a member of the sax quartet. She also won the Bank of America award for music, the USNBA award. She plans on attending Cal State Long Beach or Fullerton to study music.

 

Julie Regalado - 4 Years
Julie has held the position of Concert band section leader, uniform manager, and band staff secretary, besides performing wit the symphonic and marching bands. She has won the Hall of Fame Band Award and the USNBA Band Award. After Julie graduates, she plans to attend MSAC and then transfer to a university to study to be a nursery school teacher.

 

Garrett Ishikawa - 4 Years
Garrett has performed on both the baritone and trumpet in the Concert, Symphonic and Marching Bands. Besides being president of the EHS Radio Club, Garrett has also been named Most Promising Freshman in Industrial Arts. Garrett plans to attend Cal Poly and major in Electrical Engineering.

 

Jamie Teagle - 4 Years
Jamie has spent three years in the EHS band program after attending Baldwin Park High School for one year. She has performed in every major instrumental group at EHS. Besides the Sax Quartet, James has also been active in the Concert Choir. Her awards include member of the Outstanding Section of the Year, and the USNBA Band Award. After graduation, Jamie plans to attend Brigham Young University to major in music education.

 

Scott Tillery - 4 Years
Scott has played tuba, bass trombone, and percussion the Concert, Symphonic and Marching Bands and the Jazz Ensemble. He as served as Assistant Drum Major and tuba section leader. Scott has also been a member of the Velvet Knights and the Matadors Drum and Bugle Corps. He plans to attend a university to study Dentistry.

 

Jenny Webb - 4 Years
Jenny is a four year member of both the Symphonic and Marching bands. She has served as Band Secretary and Uniform Manager. Jenny's awards include the United States National Band Award, which is awarded to those high school band members who show good musicianship qualities. Jenny is planning on attending MSAC in the fall to study nursing.

 

A Dictionary of Band Terms

 

Backstick (back stik) v. Playing with the butt end of the stick.

Bunny (buh nee) n. any member of the drumline who hops, shakes, or jumps up and down while playing or marching.

Burn (buhrn) v. To play any lick or passage very fast...can be done solo or with other players. e.g. "Let's burn triplet diddle once." also reef,

Dirty (dur tee) adj. The precise opposite of clean - incorrect playing, style, and/or interp; playing out of ensemble, ticking out of the unison.

Duct Tape: Grey cloth of amazing strength backed with heavy-duty adhesive; an integral part of band philosophy and soution to every problem known to man.

Dynamics (die nam iks) Either loud, or louder. (volume)

Druminese (drum uh neez) n. the universal language spoken by all drummers, using mouth sounds to imitate sounds made by different drums, Ex. gak for a rimshot on a kevlar snare.

Fake it (fayk it) v. To try to look like you know the part, while you are trying to remember the drill at the same time... when you really only know half the part.

Forte: The lowest dynamic marking a drumline can play at.

Ghost (gost) v. To "fake-drum" - to take out notes of a passage you're playing but still air drum them like your playing it.

Hack (hak) v. <1> To improvise equipment (w/duct tape, etc.) <2> To play something stupid when you aren't supposed to be playing, caused by boredom and innate desire to hit your drum.

Home depot (hoe mm dee poe) Where the instructors gets the duct tape (see duct tape). Also known as the drum equipment store or drum resource center. i.e. "Hey, se need some stuff to fix the drums, lets go to home depot"

Infinity Rolls (ihn fin ih tee rolz) n. A period of time where the line starts rolling and doesn't stop until the time period is over, usually starting out at a fast tempo and high stick height, depending on the skill and endurance level of the line. i.e., Tommorow we have to do infinity rolls for 15 min.

Instructor: Person who tells you when you’re screwing up…(then praises and congratulates you at the end of the season)

Interval: A space between two band members that is random.

Lick (lik) n. Any part of a drum score, although usually concerning a solo or particularly difficult passage.

Meathead (meet hed) n. Someone who thinks they're an incredible player who really isn't.

Million Flam Rule (mihl yun flam rool) n. The rule that states "One must play a million flams before one can play a perfect flam."

Musicality (mee u sak a lee tee) see dynamics, forte, piano.

Monkey drum (muhn kee druhm) v. To "flail" each stroke, whipping the stick down and back very high, usually above your head.

Nirvana (nuhr vah na) n. A state of being achieved when you are playing a lick so effortlessly you give out an aura that you could play 10 times better than anyone else around you.

Notes (nohtz) n. A passage, or measure, that is very difficult because of the amount of notes that you play. i.e., You guys wanted some notes, so here they are.

Paper Bag (pay per bahg) n. What one of the drums on a set of tenors sounds like with a busted head.

Park-'n'-blow (park an blow) n. A part in a show where you just stand there and play; no marching. Usually during the drum solo, or for dramatic effect.

Plates (playtz) n. Cymbals.

Practice (Prah ktiss) v. <1> To take home a piece of music, or book (see book) and perform often, customarily, or habitually, perform, woodshed, or work at repeatedly so as to become proficient in the music that is being learned. <2> What most drumlines seem to forget to do, before comming to pracitce, in order to sound like a bag of suck, train wreck, etc.

Colorguard: Prance back to your set and avoid getting hit by, yelling brass players.

School Bus (skool bus) n. <1> What the drumline/band/jewels spend most of their time in. <2> Vehicle that shows up either 10 minutes before kick off or 30 minutes before warm-up going into a competition. (after it gets to its destination it usually disappears.)

Slacker (slak err) n. Any member of the drumline who doesn’t practice, do anything, wants a break every 5 minutes, whines, Etc.

Straight line (sta 8 line) Something that is supposed to resemble a figure on the field that is either perfectly horizontal or vertical and usually ends up looking like a centipede hooked on crack for 9 years.

Trainwreck (trayn rek) n. when the drumline completely, as a whole , plays so bad, thus causing the band and everyone else around them to completely suck.

Visual (vizh yoo uhl) n. Something the percussionist does (usually wants) to add a visual texture (twirls, back-sticking, fake-sticking, drum to drum, etc.) to a song when the actual piece of music or book is not ready which therefore causes the musicality and marching to go down the toilet. (twirls, back-sticking, fake-sticking, drum to drum, etc.)

Woodshed (wooh shed) <1> See practice. <2> To take a part, music, warm up, etc…go home, and part each and every single part in that piece of music, book, warm-up, etc over and over and over until you can reach a state of nirvana.
